Work Life Balance: The Basics

Work is a huge part of our lives. It takes up a large chunk of our time and efforts every week, and it can sometimes be difficult to know when to stop thinking about work. Work-life balance is the distribution of your time between your work life and your personal life. Areas of your life that aren’t related to work can be anything from family time to personal time to destress. Finding a good balance for your work and personal life is extremely important for achieving a good sense of wellbeing. Maintaining a reasonable scale can regulate your mental health, allow you to keep track of your physical health, increase your productivity, and even become a more well-rounded individual.

One important thing to note, however, is that you may not have the same definition of work-life balance as someone else. This is because we all have different priorities. Someone may consider a good work-life balance as 8 hours at work and the rest of the day with their personal life, while the next think that 6 hours at work is a better fit for them. Another misconception is that some believe that a balance of life means equal. This isn’t always the case, as some activities in your life need to be shorter or longer to be more fulfilling. Some people may prioritize family time more than personal time for example, it all depends on the person.

But how you find your best balance? There are a bunch of tips that you can consider to use in order to guide you to a better work-life ratio. The first thing to do is to accept that there is no completely perfect schedule. Understand that you should be looking for the most realistic and applicable ratio, not the perfect one. This schedule doesn’t have to be fixed either, it should be fluid so that you are able to make adjustments depending on the day you will be tackling.

The next point is to try to find a job that you love. We understand that this is not always possible, but if it is in your realm of options, go for it! Loving what you do can help you maintain a positive mindset and be more willing to push through the day during your work life. Writing out your priorities can help you see what exactly you need to work into your schedule.

It’s important to set aside some time to spend time with loved ones like friends or family. Also, make sure to include some personal time. Decompressing can help you avoid burning out. Lastly, remember that its okay to cut things out of your life that has done more harm than good. For example, don’t waste your time with friends who aren’t genuine. Save the time for something or someone more valuable. You’re always allowed to prioritize yourself first.
